POLYMER CLAY AND KELP BOWL - Side Street Studio - 1 POLYMER CLAY AND KELP BOWL - Side Street Studio - 2

Gera Scott Chandler (aMusedStudio) skillfully pairs her polymer clay with materials that are readily available along the BC coast in Canada where she lives. Gera has a penchant for making baskets and kelp is readily available near her home in Victoria.

Look closely and you’ll see that she pierces holes along the edges of the polymer bowls. She uses the holes to weave in the strands of kelp that trim her vessels.

This lovely bowl has a pebble seabed design in the clay and is adorned with Bull Kelp.

Size~ 5 inches diameter x 2 inches in height.

Keep this bowl inside in a dry atmosphere and it will have a very long life.

Polymer Clay is a synthetic material that fires at 275F. It is available in a myriad of mixable colours as well as a translucent version allowing 3 dimensional effects. It can be sculpted, stamped, carved and even turned on a lathe or potter's wheel. Adding acrylic paints, inks, micas, foils and inclusions results in amazing effects that can imitate natural materials such as jade, opal, turquoise or even rusted metal. Many traditional techniques from glass, metal and wood working such as millifiori and mokum game have been adapted by polymer clay artists.

Gera has developed her own unique approach over the last ten years. She paints her designs on sheets of clay with an acrylic and mica mixture then she runs the sheet through a pasta machine for a crackled effect before assembling the composition. Gera's 3 dimensional pieces require multiple firings as they are composed from the inner base to the final surface.
