Botswana Agate Earrings
A Sense of awe, of wonder rises in Honica when she touches these stones and considers their ancient history. These delicately banded agates began forming 150 million years ago - quartz micro crystals were influenced by changes in pressure, temperature and the presence of minerals, which determined their shapes, colours, and patterns. The rhythmic banding of Botswana Agate can be so fine that 100,000 bands may be present in an inch of stone, but it takes an electron scanning microscope to see them all. She has been hoarding these spectacular stones for almost 20 years, after she discovered that no more of these agates would be available. Introduced to the world in 1971, these coveted and holtly collectable agates are not to be found now, as the government of Botswana allowed the mining of these semi-precious stones for only a short time several decades ago. No two agates are alike, and even slices from the same stone are different, so making earring pairs is a definite challenge.
