In 1977, he emigrated with his family to Vancouver, Canada, where he studied graphic design at the Capilano College art programme in North Vancouver. By the early 1980's, he was selling his drawings and watercolours in a style reminiscent of the old prints and paintings which hung in the family home.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eUpon graduating in 1986, the wanderlust of younger years sent him travelling to the South Pacific. He discovered the Fiji Islands, and fell in love with a remote island and its inhabitants.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn that same year, van Sandwyk won an Alcan award for his limited edition book A Selection of Neighbourly Birds, illustrated with etchings printed on an antique intaglio press. This first attempt at publishing prompted a passionate venture into the world of handmade and private press books and prints.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHis watercolours, etchings and books are now collected across North America and in Europe. The National Library of Canada has maintained archives on his work since 1986, and in 1992 purchased the original drawings and paintings for his children's book The Parade to Paradise. The book Wee Folk won Juror's Choice award at the 1994 Seattle Book Fair, and also third prize at the Alcuin Awards '95 for limited editions.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHe began to divide his time equally between Vancouver and Fiji (leasing land from the neighbouring family and building for himself a simple home of grass thatch, in the traditional island style) and settled into a pleasurable routine of winter seasons in Fiji filled with painting and writing, the results of which were brought back to Canada each summer and prepared for exhibition and publication each autumn.. The fruits of these labours, his watercolours, etchings and books, are now collected across North America and in Europe. With raku pottery, the piece is first bisque fired. Then, it is glazed and undergoes a raku firing process. The raku firing process requires a special raku kiln that is fueled by propane and reaches temperatures of about 1800°F (about 982°C). In order to complete the firing process, the raku pottery must remain in the kiln for approximately 30 minutes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe raku pottery is then removed from the kiln using specially designed raku tongs. While the raku pottery piece is still hot and glowing, it is placed inside a metal can full of combustible materials. The heat emitted from the raku pottery causes these materials to catch on fire. After the materials inside the metal can catch on fire, a lid is placed over the can and the raku pottery is sealed inside. The raku pottery is capable of withstanding these high temperatures and the fire within the can because it is made from a special type of clay that is capable of withstanding thermal shock.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTraditional pottery clays, on the other hand, would crack from the drastic temperature changes raku pottery undergoes. As the fire consumes the oxygen within the can, it also draws the oxygen out of the raku pottery and its glaze. This process is called post fire reduction. It is the post fire reduction stage that creates the unique look of raku pottery. The resulting patterns and colors are unpredictable, as they are created through the natural process of oxygen removal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAfter the raku pottery remains in the sealed metal can for about 15 minutes, it is removed and placed in a can of water. This freezes the patterns that were created during the post fire reduction stage. She also spent several seasons treeplanting in various remote corners of B.C. where she witnessed first-hand the effects of industry on the environment. As well, she participates in a variety of local events such as Nautical Days or the Central Island Studio Tour. Community is a central theme of her work: she often donates pieces to support local causes such as the Cumberland Community Forest, Habitat for Humanity or YANA (You Are Not Alone).
